With more than 2,200 students, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science is one of the largest faculties of the VSB - Technical University of Ostrava. The foundations of the faculty were established in 1970 by the opening of the first independent study programme in the field of high-voltage electrical engineering. On January 1, 1991, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering was established after separation from the Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. On September 1, 1993, the name of the faculty was changed to the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (FEECS).

At present, many high-school graduates are interested in the study at FEECS. The study is focused on the latest technology in the areas of computer science, telecommunication technologies, electronics, and electrical engineering. The faculty has become an important player in the transformation of the Ostrava region, which is nowadays largely focused on the automotive industry, electrical engineering, and information technology. FEECS emphasizes co-operation with industry and takes an active part in the search for contacts with companies offering job vacancies to its graduates both within the Czech Republic and abroad. Several hundreds graduates of the FEECS have found interesting jobs in Czech and foreign companies located in the Ostrava Science and Technology Park which situated near the Faculty premises. The graduates of the FEECS have one of the highest success rates in the job market.

The cooperation with other academic, commercial, and state organizations is at FEECS plentiful and linked to the teaching and research work of academic staff members and students, especially in Master and doctoral study programmes. A large amount of scientific knowledge has been utilized during study stays abroad at European universities. FEECS closely cooperates with the Moravian-Silesian Region and the Statutory City of Ostrava. It is the leader of IT Cluster, an association that connects a large number of companies and educational institutions active in the field of information and communication technologies. Additionally, mutually beneficial cooperations in the fields of electrical engineering, electronics, and power engineering are developed with partners from Industry.

FEECS provides a high-quality education corresponding to European standards. It accepts the structured study model comprising of Bachelor, Master and doctoral study programmes offered in the full-time and part-time forms of study. All study branches are also offered in the English language. FEECS systematically improves the conditions for the integration of disabled students into the study process. All study branches are offered to disabled students with the possibility of help such as assistance service for lectures and tutorials and movement within the campus as well as individual study options. FEECS has wheelchair accessible premises and is proud to have successful graduates among students with disabilities.

FEECS has succeeded in obtaining grants for major and interesting research and development projects. Many applied research projects, dealing with problems in the fields of electrical engineering and information technology, have been awarded to FEECS. The largest projects successfully solved by FEECS's academic and research staff members include the establishment of the IT4lnnovations Center of Excellence, the regional research Centre ENET, and the construction of FEECS's new faculty building.
