FEECS students succeed in international drone competition in Vietnam

Students of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer science of VŠB - TUO took home the bronze medal from Vietnam. Nine teams from five universities took part in the competition, three from Vietnam and two from the Czech Republic.

An international competition on drone research and design was held at Ton Duc Thang University(TDTU) in Ho Chi Minh City. "The competition not only promotes interest in scientific research in this field, but also helps develop international cooperation," said Dr Tran Trong Dao, rector of the university.

FEECS was represented in Vietnam by the Propellers team consisting of Václav Janus, David Trojek and Robert Šamárek. Students spent the last few weeks preparing for the competition: programming, designing, printing on 3D printers, building hardware, debugging software and training intensively. "The competition is a unique opportunity to show not only technical skills, but also the ability to collaborate and solve complex problems in real time," recalls Radek Martinek, FEECS Vice Dean for Science and Research, who is also the team's coach.

And what was the most difficult moment for the students in the competition itself? "The very first match was really difficult. We had to get used to balls popping out of the goals because we were trying to fly over the allowed limit. But it paid off and we never had any fouls," says team captain Václav Janus. The Propellers team advanced further in the competition, beating the students of UTB Zlín in the match for third place. "We are really satisfied, the competition was great. It turned out that the TDT University teams that took the first two places had a long preparation. But we didn't let them get us down and the steady hands of our pilot won us the bronze," Janus said.

The international drone competition will continue next year, with the next edition taking place at VSB - TUO in June.
