Diploma thesis

The thesis is a larger professional study. Its successful completion and defence is a condition for obtaining an academic degree and a gateway to the state final examinations. The student should demonstrate that he/she is able to independently and creatively elaborate a professional topic.

At the beginning of the summer semester of the first year, students choose their thesis topic published in the EDISON system. They first contact the supervisor of the chosen thesis, meet with him/her and discuss the assignment. They then submit the topic in the EDISON system. Students can come to the supervisor of their field of study with a proposal for their own thesis topic, who will assess it and, if necessary, recommend a suitable supervisor. From this point on, it is advisable to work actively on the implementation of the thesis and to communicate with the thesis supervisor.

During the winter semester of the second year (usually in November), they will pick up the original bachelor's thesis assignment from the Department of Cybernetics and Biomedical Engineering secretariat. This assignment must be inserted officially as the second sheet of the thesis. There are two compulsory courses associated with the thesis, namely Thesis Project I in the winter semester and Thesis Project II in the summer semester. These courses are completed with credits awarded by the thesis supervisor. The award of credit is governed by the requirements for awarding credit published in the course descriptions in the EDISON system.

Master theses must be uploaded to the IS no later than the deadline specified on the original thesis assignment. The thesis is also handed in printed and bound in hardcover to the thesis supervisor. The two versions of the thesis - the electronic version and the printed version - must be identical.

Registration for the state final examination

Students register for the HSS in the IS by the deadline defined in the timetable of the respective academic year. The ACEs take place only in May/June (regular term) and then in August (make-up term, only for those students who failed the regular term in May). Only those students who have registered for the CAP, have their thesis in the status of PASSED, have successfully passed the study check and verified the data in the IS will be registered for the CAP committee.

Final study check

The student must have all courses in his/her OSP in a status of COMPLETED by the deadline listed in the academic year schedule. Only the credits from these courses are counted in the degree audit and for the calculation of the merit scholarship. The student must earn a total of 120 credits for the degree. The student must complete all enrolled courses (including electives) or he/she will not be admitted to the CSP, even if the number of credits is sufficient.

Expected course of defence
  1. Students will participate in the SZZ according to the timetable, see Edison.
  2. The student will arrive about 30 minutes before the allotted time according to the schedule.
  3. The first 20 minutes:
    • The registrar will introduce the student to the state examination committee.
    • The student receives a total of two questions from the SZZ subjects, which are available on the SMAK.VSB.CZ repository
    • Students prepare answers to the questions.
  1. During the next 20 minutes the student defends his/her thesis.
    • The recorder reads the evaluation of the supervisor and the opponent of the thesis.
    • The remaining time is reserved for questions from committee members regarding the thesis.
  2. Last 20 minutes:
    • The student answers the questions in the order he/she chooses.
  1. The committee will notify students of the results of the CAP usually after the committee members have conferred after all questions have been answered by the student.

Students who fail the AAL in June and the committee recommends that the thesis be revised will submit the revised thesis by the deadline specified in the academic year schedule (usually in July) so that they can take the make-up AAL in August.

Repeating a year or extending the examination period

If students fail to meet the requirements of the final examination, they must submit a written request to the study department for a repeat of the year or an extension of the examination period or termination of studies by the deadline set in the schedule of the relevant academic year. A student may repeat the same year only once.

Students who will repeat the final year and have already enrolled in any course twice must submit a request for a third enrolment of the course (maximum of two courses) to the study department. Courses that are not successfully completed in a given year will automatically carry over to the new academic year after proper enrollment in the following academic year. Application forms can be found at https://www.fei.vsb.cz/cs/o-fakulte/uredni-deska/formulare/formulare-ke-studiu/.

Students who have not submitted their bachelor's thesis by the given deadline will submit it in the repeated year according to the academic year schedule. During the winter semester of the following academic year, students can collect a new original assignment (with a new submission date for the DP) from the departmental secretariat. Students who are no longer able to repeat the final year and have not submitted their bachelor's thesis by the given deadline must submit a request for an extension of the examination period to the study department. These students must submit the undergraduate thesis by the end of the semester and have all courses in a PASSED status on the date of the degree audit. They will not participate in the CAP until the following academic year in May/June.

Electronic enrolment in the repeated year

Enrolment will take place in the 1st week of September. Your verification of your data in IS Edison is a prerequisite for electronic enrolment in the repeat year. Instructions for this verification will be emailed after verification. You must complete the data verification no later than the deadline listed in the schedule for that academic year.
