The Biomedical Engineering Group is active in organizing professional and presentation events not only in the field of Biomedical Engineering. We participate in many popular education meetings and scientific research conferences.

The evolution of biomedical engineering, or the inseparable alliance of medicine and technology

The cardiologist of the Ostrava City Hospital, MUDr. František Jurek, is an enthusiast for technology and a promoter of its use in medical practice. He also teaches at the Department of Cybernetics and Biomedical Engineering at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Informatics of the Technical University of Ostrava. In a debate with moderator Jiří Šíma, he mentions the history of the field, compares the use of biomedical technology in the past and today, outlines the development and future of the field.

Meeting with Mark Penhaker

Mark Penhaker is freshly writing his academic title of professor in front of his name. He received it in the field of biomedical engineering. However, he was a rather mediocre student in high school and his dream was to study Egyptology.

In the Cocktail, you will hear from him why he eventually changed his mind about his planned profession, as well as his connection to the statue of the Vixen Bystrouška in Hukvaldy.

Promoting Biomedical Engineering at DoD and Art and Science

Every year, the Biomedical Engineering Group participates in the VŠB-TU Open Day, the Art and Science Festival and other popularization events where biomedical laboratory equipment is demonstrated, including mobile patient ultrasound, patient monitors and other measurement systems used in clinical practice. Attendees of these events have the opportunity to experience the sensing of real biological signals and become more familiar with the activities being addressed in the field of Biomedical Engineering.

Medical start-up incubator

The expert group of Biomedical Engineering has already twice co-organized the Medical Start-up Incubator, which aimed to establish contacts for mutual cooperation on practical projects between the University Hospital Ostrava and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Informatics at the University of Mines During the event, individual presenters introduced their workplaces and areas of possible cooperation, or offered their technical skills and experience. The second meeting took place within the prestigious international conference IEEE Healthcom 2018.

Biomedical technology in secondary schools

In the framework of the project "Biomedical Technology in Secondary Schools", selected third and fourth year students learned what biomedical technology is, what it is used for and how it works. An expert and very interesting lecture on this topic was given by Ing. Marek Penhaker, Ph.D from the University of Mining and Metallurgy - Technical University of Ostrava, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. At the same time, our students were informed about the possibility of studying at this university, as this field of study is becoming more and more popular and attractive, thus enabling its graduates to find employment on the labour market more easily.
