Summary
Handling and managing XML data is the up-to-date research problem. In a real environment, we can find some use-cases where it is appropriate to apply a native XML database. Data from this database is often retrieved by XPath or XQuery languages. The first use-case is the Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA). In this architecture, XML is used for a communication between a service provider and client. Consequently, heterogeneous and dynamic XML documents are used in this case. The second use-case is a web information system where data is transformed from an RDBMS to an XML document which is passed to a user. If we use a native XML database, the user directly retrieves the XML document. In this case, the inefficient data transformation is canceled. Consequently, tools and methods supporting all necessary technologies are needed. Handling and managing XML data in heterogeneous and dynamic environments brings a lot of questions that have not been answered by XML research community yet. In this project, we will target these particular problems: data modeling and optimization, query processing and optimization, data updates and evolution, and data security.
